Akhiran Hood Dalam Bahasa Inggris

Salah satu cara membentuk nomina dalam bahasa Inggris adalah menambahkan akhiran -hood pada nomina lain atau adjektif. Nomina yang mendapat akhiran -hood biasanya menyatakan :

1. Hubungan seseorang dengan keluarganya

2. Umurnya

3. Status pernikahannya

4. Kedudukan sosialnya.

Kata-kata yang dapat diberi akhiran -hood tidak banyak jumlahnya. Kata-kata tersebut adalah :

1. Childhood = masa anak-anak

    Contoh : I cannot remember anything that happened in my childhood.

2. Boyhood = masa anak-anak untuk laki-laki    

    Contoh : He was naughty in his boyhood

3. Brotherhood = 1. Rasa persaudaraan

    Contoh : One of the main purposes of this organization is to promote brotherhood among its members.

                            2. (Para anggota) Perkumpulan yang mempunyai tujuan bersama khususnya agama

       Contoh : Our brotherhood has a membership of two hundred.

4. False hood  = 1. Penyataan yang salah

    Contoh : How can you utter such false hoods?

                           2. Kebohongan

    Contoh : How can you expect me to believe him? 

                   Everybody know he is full of falsehoods

5. Fatherhood = Keadaan menjadi ayah

    Contoh : The birth of his first child has given him a pround sense of fatherhood

6. Girlhood = masa anak-anak untu perempuan

    Contoh : I learned to be independent early in my girlhood, when i lost both my parents.

7. Knighthood = 1. Pangkat kesatriaan Inggris

    Contoh : Having won many battles, he was given a knighthood

                           2. Para kesatria     

    Contoh : Many stories of the past, true or legendary, have been based on English knighthood

8. Likelihood = kemungkinan

    Contoh : There is no likelihood of his being appointed president.

9. Motherhood = Keadaan menjadi ibu

    In villages, girls at the age of 16 or 17 have already entered motherhood

10. Neighbourhood = 1. Daerah sekitar

      Contoh : There are no shops in my neighbourhood

                                   2. Perasaan menjadi tetangga yang baik

      Contoh : Good neighbourhood is necessary for the education of a child.

11. Priesthood = keadaan menjadi Pendeta atau ulama

      Contoh : He decided to spend the rest of his life in priesthood

12. Sisterhood = Kebiarawatian

      Contoh : Sisterhoods can be found in the Roman Catholic Church

13. Widowhood = kejandaan

      Contoh : After the death of her husband, she spent the rest of her life in widowhood

14. Womanhood = 1. Wanita pada umumnya

      Contoh : When she speaks for the emancipation of women she speaks for all womanhood

                               2. Kewanitaan

      Contoh : My youngest sister died before she reached womanhood.
